Concept of Adjectives:
Adjective is one of the major parts of speech that works as modifier for noun or pronoun. We can say that the words which describe the quality of noun or pronoun are adjectives.
e.g:
This is my favourite black shirt
(The word Black is describing quality of noun i.e Shirt)
It was the worst food I have ever eat
(Here the word Worst is modifying the noun Food)
She is good to follow
(The word good is describing the quality of she)
In all the above examples each noun/pronoun is modified by a particular words, these are known to Adjectives.
Types of Adjectives:
Adjectives in English Grammar can be classified in seven categories. Let's have a look on all of these
1- Quantitative:
These adjective define the quantity of any noun or pronoun. When we answer any question like how much or how many we just include the quantitative adjectives in our response. The Words like dozen, kilometre, numbers, litre are considers as quantitative adjective.
e.g
How many balls do you have in your bag?
I have only 3 balls in my bag
(Here the quantity of ball which is a noun is 3, so the number 3 that is describing the quantity of noun is quantitative noun)
2- Possesive:
These are the adjectives which shows possession or we can say that the words which describe the sense of possession on anything for noun or pronoun are known as possessive adjective. Ex: Your, My, his, her, its
e.g.
Who is the owner of building?
(In the above interrogative sentence the word 'who' is the pronoun that shows his/her possession on building.
This Building is mine.
(Here the word 'mine' is possessive adjective that is used to explain possession on the building)
3- Descriptive:
These are the adjectives that describe quality of a noun or pronoun. Ex: Long, Short, Beautiful, aggressive, colour, new, soft, hard, weak, wooden and other more.
e.g
This is a beautiful skirt that I want to buy
(beautiful is describing the quality of noun i.e Skirt)
4- Demonstrative Adjective:
These adjectives describes the referring noun or pronouns. This, that, those, these all are such kind of adjectives.
ex:
Whose purse is this?
This purse is mine
(Here 'this' is referencing to the noun 'purse' so it will be considered as demonstrative adjective.
5- Article:
All the 3 articles A, An, The are technically act as an adjective. Generally if we think about articles technically, we will find that all of them are defining either quantity or standard.
Ex:
An Umbrella
A Television
The Sun
All of the above discussed articles are playing the role of an adjective, that's why they all are called as article adjective.
6- Distributive:
These adjectives define specific members in a group. When we talk about one or more than one nouns or pronouns in a group we use the distributive adjective.
Ex:
Each member need to wear this uniform
Every patient has to walk in the evening
Either you or your friend can go outside at a time
Neither of you can go outside
7- Interrogative
The sentences in which questions are asked in reference to nouns or pronoun are known as interrogative adjectives. The sentences will start with words like which and what and generally followed by Noun or pronoun.
Ex:
Which song you will like to sing?
Whom notebook is this?
